Perugia/Assisi/Todi

Perugia is the capital of the Umbria region, and its old city lies on top of a hill. Within its walls it has some of the best preserved medieval streets and buildings in Italy and is a center for Italian language courses at the university.

Orvieto is perched on a plateau high overlooking the local vineyards. The Duomo of Orvieto is considered to be one of the finest Romanesque-Gothic churches in all of Italy and took over 300 years to complete and includes many detailed carvings.

Assisi is a beautiful medieval town with lovely views, narrow streets and is the burial place of St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order. The Basilica di San Francesco is composed of two churches each built on top of the other and were decorated by the foremost artists of the day. The lower contains the crypt of St Francis, while the upper, seriously damaged in an earthquake in 1997, has undergone extensive and innovative restoration and is once again open to the public.

Gubbio vies with Assisi to be the most medieval town in the region, with twisting streets, terracotta roofed houses and fountained piazzas. One of which contains the Fontana dei Matti, named after the tradition that if someone were to walk around the fountain three times they would go insane.
